The Schaffermahlzeit in Bremen is the world's oldest continuing annual fraternal banquet and was first organised in 1545. It is considered one of Bremen's most important social events. At the Schaffermahlzeit, donations are collected to support seafarers in need and their surviving dependants and, for some years now, to support nautical students. The traditional exclusion of women has been increasingly criticised, which is why the traditional event has been completely open to women since 2020.
In Bremen, around 250,000 people or a good 42 per cent of the population are involved in voluntary work - significantly more than in the other city states. The importance of voluntary work is also reflected in the Bremen Volunteer Card, which has been issued since September 2010. It is the only cross-state volunteer card in Germany and is valid in Bremen and Lower Saxony. In addition to voluntary work, financial commitment also plays an important role: to this day, for example, the Bürgerpark and the city forest are maintained without state funding by the Bürgerparkverein, which has a good 2,600 members, making it the largest privately financed city park in Germany.
Training and counselling on anti-discrimination, anti-racism, diversity & more Equal opportunities, anti-discrimination and diversity are issues that move us as a society and present us with both great opportunities and challenges. The Korean School Bremen teaches Korean children living in Germany, as well as German children growing up bilingually here, in the Korean language, the history and the culture of the country. In addition, however, the school also offers a platform for all Koreans living in the Bremen area to help them find their way around if they have any problems or questions.
In a world that is constantly changing, girls and women often face many challenges. As I reflected on my own experiences and the stories of women in my circle, I realised how important it is to create a space where we can support, empower and encourage one another. This point of contact was born from [...]
Everyone is wired differently and that is a good thing! Neurodiversity describes the natural diversity of human brains and ways of thinking. Neurological differences are therefore not deficits, but simply variants of human development. There is no single „right“ way of thinking and learning. Our education system and professional environment are not yet sufficiently geared towards neurodiversity. That [...]

The Mucu Café is the reflection of the Gröpelingen district with its stories and its people in the form of cake, a place that brings people together, where you can relax among friends and family but also learn something. The start-up that drives Gröpelingen forward, not alone but together.
Being punished for making music, swing dancing or simply for listening to music? Unfortunately, that could happen during the National Socialist era, with major regional differences. The transnational project takes a comparative look at the Nazi persecution practices targeting the Northwest German swing youth, the Czech Potápki, and the swing and jazz music scene in occupied Poland, and develops multi-perspective, interdisciplinary and participatory […]
