Nazi injustice „Degenerate Music“. Persecuted swing dancers and jazz musicians in North-West Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland

Being punished for making music, swing dancing, or simply for listening to music? During the National Socialist era, that could unfortunately happen, and there were major regional differences. This transnational project takes a comparative look at the Nazi persecution practices directed against the North-West German swing youth, the Czech Potápki, and the swing and jazz music scene in occupied Poland, while developing multi-perspective, interdisciplinary, and participatory educational formats. In all three countries, the project fosters public awareness of this specific form of resistance and the associated injustice committed by the Nazis. The aim is to create a shared European space of memory. Through empathy-promoting and competence-oriented learning, it empowers young people and adults to make discrimination-sensitive judgments in the present. This is conveyed through workshops (dance, music, content delivery), interviews with descendants of the persecuted and contemporary witnesses, readings, lectures, panel discussions, documentary films, exhibitions, concerts, dance events, and historical swing walks.
